DILLY BAG, ARNHEM LAND, Northern Territory. Woven plant fibre. For centuries, Aboriginal women from Australia’s Northern Territory have made dilly bags to hold food, tools, and other items. These bags have been twined tightly, and the horizontal threads have been dyed – other bags are left natural. Some have a looser weave and a delicate lace-like look, depending on what is to be carried. Dilly bags sometimes hold secret, sacred items. Such ceremonial bags might be painted in ochre and have feathers woven into them. Approx L19 x 12cm. PROVENANCE John Magers Collection, Sydney.
